Exclusive Interview with Vlada Haggerty

Vlada Interview

For the past few months, we have been working on our sixth phone case with VladaMUA! Everything about Vlada’s designs screams uniqueness, creativity, and taking things to a new level. Which is why we couldn’t resist collaborating with her once again! This is our exclusive interview with the Ukrainian-born makeup artist herself where she talks about what inspires her and her journey in the beauty industry. Enjoy!

1. You have designed five cases with us and each one is completely different from the other. Where do you draw inspiration from and how do you know if it has never been done before?

I do my best to research images if I have an idea, just to make sure. Also, I try to stay away from very obvious ideas, because chances are, it’s been done before. I love to go to craft stores to find inspiration. All the different textures, colors, ribbons, fabrics just make my mind sparkle!

2. I’m sure that you’ve had many companies try to collaborate with you. Why did you choose to put your artwork and ideas into the hands of Fifth & Ninth?

For me working with companies comes down to working with people. And Fifth & Ninth people really get me!

3. How long does it typically take you to design each lip look?

It depends on the complexity. Anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Usually the painted designs take the longest for me.

4. Many of your designs, including your newest collaboration with us, features bumble bees and honeycombs. Is there a particular reason as to why you consistently incorporate these into your designs?

I just love bees! My great grandfather was a beekeper. He had a little bee farm in the woods and every summer I used to come visit him there and watch him work. My family taught me to respect the bees because they work so hard and are so important for having food on the table (my great grandparents grew their own fruits and vegetables). Also, mom calls me bee sometimes because I work so much haha!

5. You went from putting your designs on your own lips, to other makeup companies stealing your ‘lip drip’ designs, to becoming Smashbox’s ‘lip editor in chief’ all within the span of four years. How crazy has your journey been? What experiences have been the most memorable?

It’s been so surreal! I’ve learned so much through all of these experiences! The most memorable and iconic for me personally was meeting and working for Pat McGrath when she first launched her makeup line. She is the inspiration to all of us!

6. Do you have anything to say to young artists who may be scared to make the jump and start pursuing their dreams in the beauty and fashion industry?

Fear is what keeps you away from achieving your dreams. Looking back, all of the best things that happened in my career were really scary at first. Make the jump, it’s worth it!

As you can see, Vlada’s heart of gold and amazing sense of creativity are just two of the many reasons why we absolutely love working with her! Hopefully her words have inspired you as much as they have inspired us. Check out Vlada’s newest case ‘Bee Kind’ by clicking the link here!

Halloween Costumes Inspired by VladaMUA

halloween looks

We are two weeks into October and the Halloween spirit is officially at an all time high! We are super excited (and stressed!) about planning out our halloween costumes, but we’ve been drawing inspiration from our favorite master of the lip drip, Vlada Haggerty! Her artwork has helped us figure out some creative and trendy costumes, so we wanted to share our ideas with you!

Sugar Skull

A sugar skull makeup look for Halloween is great for those who want to express their creativity and artistic skills, but also don’t want to spend a ton of money on a costume. Vlada’s lip art here is inspired by sugar skulls, which originate from the Mexican holiday called Day of the Dead.

Grab some bright, colorful paint and think of your face as a canvas! Sugar skulls typically have flowers, spider webs, and other colorful patterns. Add some flowers to your hair and put on your favorite Little Black Dress and you’ve got the perfect costume!

A classic vampire costume is always the way to go when you’re looking for a costume that will make you look hot, yet scary. This Vlada look features her popular lip drip design with melting lipstick that almost looks like blood. This design is actually featured on one of our cases! Click here to check it out.

All you’ll need to be a vampire this halloween is a white t-shirt that you can rip up, and visit your local halloween costume store for some fake blood and fangs. Put it all together and everyone around you will almost be convinced that you’re an actual bloodsucker.

Salt, Tequila, Lime

Looking for the perfect group costume for you and two of your BFFs? Well, what better way to represent an amazing trio other than an amazing trio? Salt, tequila, and lime! Vlada’s lime lip design here is actually also one of our cases! Check it out here.

In order to be the best salt, tequila, and lime trio on Halloween, you’re going to need a white dress for the salt, a green dress for the lime, and a gold dress with your favorite tequila brands’ name written in big letters across the top.

If you’re looking for a costume that is out of this world, then you should consider being an alien for halloween! All that you’ll need is metallic clothes and metallic makeup.

We recommend a pair of metallic shorts (any color that you’d like!) with a metallic silver body suit or cropped top. Add a lip color similar to the one in Vlada’s design here (that we also have as a phone case! Click here.) and a pair of alien antennas. All that you’ll need after this is a UFO.

Red Devil

Red lips are all the rage during the fall season so it’s no surprise that we just had to include two of Vlada’s red lip looks! Another fun costume idea that you can do with your best gal pal is angel/devil. If you happen to be the devil, we’re here to tell you exactly what you need!

Obviously, red devil horns are a must-have for this costume. You’ll also need a bright red dress and red heels. Add fishnet stockings to look extra fiery. Top it all off with a bold red lip like this and you’ll be the hottest one in the room. And not just because devils love fire.

We hope that some of these looks have inspired you to start the search for your Halloween costumes! Yes, it’s a lot of preparation for only one night, but Halloween is a day where you can be ANYTHING that you want to be. So you might as well make the most of it!

Spotlight on: Bryce McGillivray

It’s every Rhode Island born fashionista’s dream. Graduate from the University of Rhode Island with your first textile kit in hand, pack your bags, and head to the big city. That’s exactly what our Creative Director, Bryce McGillivray, did when she graduated in 2014. However, Bryce’s dream was completely revamped once she experienced New York first hand.

Following her graduation, Bryce took a bold step and took on an unpaid internship at Bismark Phillips Communications and Media, a PR agency that represents some of the most famous names in the fashion industry. With the experience she gained, a door was then opened for her as an Executive Assistant for Kelly Cutrone, who gained her fame being a public relations mogul in NYC. Although the experience was incredible, it gave Bryce a new mindset to realize her heart belonged home. “These two experiences gave me a very clear understanding of how tough the fashion industry is, and it wasn’t necessarily what I had set out in the beginning”, Bryce explained.

Returning home to Rhode Island, Bryce reconsidered where she wanted to take her career. After reconnecting with Mark Mesrobian, the Executive Vice President of Fifth & Ninth’s parent company, Complete Sourcing Solutions, she accepted a position as the social media and marketing coordinator.

As the saying goes, you can take the fashionista out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the fashionista (or that’s how we say it here at F&N!). After working as the social media and marketing manager for a few months, Bryce’s passion for fashion and design was pushing her to accomplish more. She then developed into a Creative Director for a new in house brand, Fifth & Ninth. The name was inspired by the fashion garment district, “where trends are born.”

Given the freedom to let her creative side soar, Fifth & Ninth took off. In it’s most recent endeavor, F&N has partnered with several online celebrities and social media influencers, such as Smashbox Cosmetics Lip Editor in Chief, Vlada Haggerty, (you can purchase her case here!?) to create a line of cobranded iPhone cases. In the future, the company is looking to expand into lifestyle products such as sunglasses and watches.

Since launching the brand, Bryce has been passionate about providing internships to local Rhode Island girls so they can get industry experience in their own backyard. In addition, the company also took on eight extraordinary College Brand Ambassadors (stay tuned to read about the program)! Bryce’s advice to young female entrepreneurs is to “take the low paying job, the free internship, feel what it is like to be at the bottom and struggle.”

The sky’s the limit and the opportunities are endless when it comes to F&N’s future. Bryce has the vision to expand their tech accessories to more than just phone cases and beauty banks, potentially adding sunglasses, watches, handbags, and so on. Bryce is also newly engaged (???) so a wedding collection could potentially be on her mind.

Bryce does an exceptional job at representing the city in the Ocean State, by influencing girls to believe that you don’t have to be in New York to be successful in the fashion industry. For more behind the scenes about F&N, check out our article in the Providence Journal and Rhode Island Monthly. To keep up with our Creative Director Bryce, follow her blog Blonde in Boutins.
